Introduction of written academic genres in English (research proposals, bachelor's theses); seminar presentations of research findings; academic register and vocabulary practice; discussion of formal criteria of research proposals and master's theses. To draft research proposals, entire papers or theses in English academic prose, including how to deal with academic sources and quotations.To present academic findings in spoken Academic English

Lern- und Lehrmethode

Discussion and emonstration of academic conventions on quoting from academic sources, use of academic voice, appropriate formal style and register. Discussion of existing texts as specimens of the respective academic genres (e.g. research proposals, master theses). Writing workshop (hands-on approach)

Prüfungsmethode

Students will be graded on the basis of a sample of their master theses (approximately ten pages), on how well they have applied the criteria of Academic English (e.g. quoting, formal vocabulary and style, text cohesion).

The students will be given assistance with drafting academic texts in English (e.g. research proposals, master's theses). After the course, they will be able to use formal academic register and vocabulary, and structure their papers in a coherent manner. Furthermore, they will also be assisted in spoken academic English, and will be able to present their papers in formal spoken register.
